| Vinegar? |
[15 Nov 2009|02:56am] |
I've heard people talk up vinegar as both a clarifying shampoo OR a conditioner. Is it one or the other? Is it both? How safe are ACV rinses for curly hair?
And because I love pictures, and because y'all might not be quite sick of it yet: my hair, which is a total diva and just wants attention. I did a nice olive oil + lavender deep condition last night (rinsed with Giovanni shampoo then conditioned with DevaCurl) and it feels GOOD.

Heart rhythm research remains a narrow field with limited applications despite a wide distribution of electrocardiography methods in practical medicine and medical research. Suggested cardiorhythm related study in close relation with mental processes study allows an expanding concept of the heart rhythm information content. Mental processes and heart rhythm are considered as related processes influencing/determining behavior. A special accent was made on time-scale of described phenomena. This monograph is based on the author’s research and the newest observations of scientists from different fields. The proposed study focuses on separate elements of complex problems, for example, diagnostics and treatment of various depression-disorders based on new roles of the cardiorhythm. The discussed concept could be applied in sport-related medicine, teaching and psychology as well as in the general improvement of human performance area. The simple style of the monograph does not require special knowledge from the reader and makes it useful for a wide range of researchers in areas of physiology, psychology, psychiatry, neurology and cardiology.

| Pink, purple, blue, and teal!! |
[15 Nov 2009|02:24am] |
I dyed my hair pink blue and teal, so far, twice. I obviously seperated my hair into 3 layers. The first time I did it, I used Paintbox by Fudge on the pink top layer. I mixed Raspberry Beret and Pretty Flamingo. The middle layer, I used Xtremerz by Tessa (it sucks) and for the layer underneath I used Punky colours/Directions Lagoon blue mixed with Turquoise.
It was very magenta at first, and faded to more of an actual pink.. ( Lots of pictures )

| Lidocaine and Eating |
[14 Nov 2009|10:38pm] |
I have many tiny sores on the underside of my tongue and lower lip which are making it difficult to eat. My doctor didn't know what they were. He gave me some lidocaine to kill the pain but the directions on the lidocaine say not to eat for an hour after I apply it. While it does say not to ingest large amounts of it, is it the ingestion of the lidocaine which is problematic or simply the likelihood of biting my tongue when it's numb? I feel comfortable with the chance of the latter, especially if I am drinking broth or soup and not potatoes or nuts or something where I'm chewing. I'm already using garlic to numb my mouth -- I chew up a clove and keep it in there while I'm thrashing and crying from the pain but then my mouth is numb for at least 30 minutes during which time I can eat (the garlic should also help decrease the swelling although it hasn't produced visible changes). So any risk of chomping down on my tongue I am already taking by using the garlic. I only numb the underside of my tongue and lower lip so the rest of my tongue is free of lidocaine (except, of course, for unintended transfer). I've been eating like a chicken -- tossing the food to the back of my mouth where it doesn't hurt -- I'm sure it funny to watch but I just want to eat, I'm hungry!

| question about fleas, the prevention and killing thereof |
[15 Nov 2009|12:10am] |
|
I'm wondering about flea prevention/flea killing products. My kitty is 14 years old and in good health, generally seeming like a much younger cat. She's indoor-only, and I've never used anything such as Frontline, etc, on her because we've never had a problem with fleas.
Problem is, for the last two weeks I've been staying at my mother's house to look after her dog while mom is recuperating from knee replacement surgery. Mom told me she bought some BioSpot for the cat while we are here since they've been having a problem with fleas that is bad enough she thought they were getting carried inside on her clothes, not just on the dog. I decided to wait and see as far as this goes since I really didn't like the idea of putting toxic chemicals on my cat. (Especially not for the first time at her age.)
So. She hasn't been scratching crazily or seeming to groom more than normal but I did notice today that there are a lot of tiny black specks in her fur (her fur is white and orange so they were easy to see) and I recall reading that it is a major sign of fleas. I read all the packaging on the BioSpot stuff and then went ahead and applied it.
It's been twelve hours or so and she seems fine, she's even forgiven me for putting nasty wet stuff on her and making her reek like she's been doused in DEET, but now I'm feeling concerned about having put it on her and wondering if anyone else has used this product and what the results were/is there a better or safer brand or method to use? I'm not one to necessarily believe that if something is more expensive it must be better but I would feel better if it had been a brand I'd heard of. I probably should have been more calm and waited to check it out first, I realize, but I was kind of like "yikes! she's got fleas."
Any information or general adivice regarding flea infestation would be much appreciated!

| artificial sweetener equivalents. |
[14 Nov 2009|08:51pm] |
|
I've been making my iced tea with Sweet'N Low for years and have been wanting to cut this out for some time now. We finally finished up the last of the packets in the house and today I made the first pitcher with turbinado sugar. The Sweet'N Low website states that 1/4 cup of sugar is equal to six packets of S'NL. I use 5 packets to a pitcher, so I figured 1/4 cup should be plenty. No way. It tastes virtually unsweetened. I had to add at least another cup to the pitcher for there to be any taste difference, and as any good Southerner knows, now it's not sweet tea since the sweetener was added after the brewing process, it's just tea with sugar. And most of it just settled undissolved at the bottom of the pitcher anyway. Can anybody give me some advice, tell me what I did wrong? I'm new to turbinado so perhaps it's just not sweet enough for me? (Incidentally, I found that evaporated cane juice in bulk is much cheaper, I'm planning to buy some tomorrow.)

| Shocked? |
[14 Nov 2009|10:58pm] |
|
Hey everyone. This may sound a little strange... but I think my little guy was shocked earlier after pulling a cord from a socket. Normally I would call the vet but unfortunately she's not in until Monday and this is my first time dealing with this type of situation... so I figured a good opinion would help me a lot.
About 45 minutes ago my fiancee & I were in the living room when we saw Felix chewing on one of our lamp cords. I quickly got up to stop him.. but as I did, he pulled the cable right out of the socket which literally caused a visible spark before blowing the light bulb. He didn't show any immediate signs of injury: he was just a bit surprised and ran behind the couch. The socket was actually smoking at this point. We kept a good watch on him after cleaning everything up, checked his ears, the inside of his mouth, face, paws, etc and at least on the surface, he didn't suffer a scratch. The only thing that's concerning me right now, is that he reeks of a musky, burnt smell around his face. Obviously if he was caught in the smoke it would make sense... but I'm a little worried if this is the sort of thing that could cause physical harm without actually seeing it. His behavior seems pretty normal: he's still hyped up, playing with his toys and acting as usual. He doesn't like it when I touch his face though: he squirms.
My main question is, are there specific signs I should be looking for? I do work tomorrow pretty much all day so I'd rather not have to call out and bring him to an emergency room if this is something that can wait until Monday for me to ring his usual vet. If this is something really serious though, I'll definitely get him there asap.
I'm -really- not sure why he was chewing on the cords. We've had him since he was a little guy two years ago and this is the first time he's ever done this. Thanks for any and all help!

I thought it was absolutely hilarious, and I wanted to get one for my baby to be, except like an idiot I never saved the link. Does anyone remember seeing anything like this? I can't remember if it was an actual post or just a comment in another post, but I want to get it so badly- I'd hugely appreciate your help!
Thanks so much!!! :)

| EXTREMELY poofy frizzy hair... HELP! |
[14 Nov 2009|03:22pm] |
| [ |
mood |
| |
frustrated |
] |
Okay, I don't have curly hair, I actually have wavy hair, but have some of the most unmanagable NON-curly poofy hair of anyone I've ever met. Some people try to help me but always feel the need to append "my hair isn't as bad as yours though."
Some pics:
And a close-up of the texture:

These were today after I washed it so the frizz is 1/10 of what it can be (though it gets bad quickly) but the volume is as out-of-control as ever. I actually have had people tell me... I'd be so pretty... if I could only do something about my hair!
The worst was a comment one friend made to me (although he was being very honest): "Well the way your hair is now, long and out of control, kinda gives you this feral jungle woman look, no offense. Coupled with your height, it gives you this image like you just came down from the woods to feast upon the souls of little boys and girls and take their candy." OUCH!
So okay... the long hair is not working for me, and makes me look like a "jungle woman" because it poofs out more. But what kind of cut could actually look good on my hair? Many years ago I tried getting it layered once and that was a DISASTER! It made my hair even MORE poofy! The layers rested on top of one another and just expanded my hair further. My hair (as you can see from the picture) is rather fluffy and the hairs do not touch closely, but rather are very light and have a lot of space between them, which is what makes my hair so poofy. When it is wet and weighed down, it's actually quite thin (and actually looks good, too!) The normalvolume of my hair is actually so extreme that it makes me look BAD, and the frizz can get really bad and make it look even worse.
Here is some more info to help clarify my situation a little bit:
1. My hair care is as follows: I shampoo and condition it about twice a week. I do NOT blow dry it; I did last year but my hair doesn't look much different either way so I see no purpose in damaging it for no reason. I also don't straighten it and am currently putting no products in it other than shampoo and conditioner. I tend to shampoo in warm water, then put conditioner in my hair and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes while I do the rest of my shower routine. Then I wash the conditioner out with lukewarm water. Then I squeeze as much moisture out of my hair as I possibly can with my hands, then I take a towel and squeeze and pat out whatever else I can, but try not to rub it too much. Then I put it up in the towel for about 15 minutes while I get dressed and then I take it out of the towel and comb it with a wide-toothed comb and leave it down until it dries (I don't ever use a brush for detangling, just a wide-toothed comb). Then during the days I am not washing it, I comb it with my wide-toothed comb once or twice a day, and about once an hour or so I comb over it with a boar bristle brush because that is the only thing I have found that even slightly helps my awful frizz, although the effects ARE temporary.
2. I did 3 months of no poo and it was AWFUL! I have very hard water at my dormitory, and my hair felt rough and constantly looked icky and never seemed to adjust to not being washed much. I could probably stretch my shampooings to once a week now though, if that would help any. But NO MORE NO POO! I can't even believe I was able to stand 3 months.
3. My hair actually gets FRIZZIER when it's greasy. This is the one that nobody can understand, but it's true. It's mainly the top of my head, and I can have a layer of grease so thick that my hair is plastered to my head, but on TOP of this will form this extreme layer of frizz that is even MORE tenacious and NOTHING will get it down! Almost like my hair is SO frizzy that the grease just gets on the frizz and the frizz pops up ANYWAY and is STRENGTHENED by the grease... ARGH!
4. Garnier Fructise is the worst choice I ever made. It helped a LITTLE with the frizz (but did NOTHING for the poofiness) but just the shampoo and conditioner set off terrible cystic acne all over my chin that I still have scars from. And when I started using the frizz serum, I started getting pimples on my forehead too! Something in Garnier Fructise makes me MAJORLY break out, and I CANNOT use it (and it didn't even really help that much anyway!)
5. I DO dye my hair black. I last dyed it in August and haven't redyed it yet because I'm worried about making things worse. However, my hair has always been this awful, poofy frizzy mess. It did not start with the hair dye!
I've been battling this hair for years and I'm honestly at a wit's end. a) I need to figure out a way to weigh it down and make it look GOOD. b) I need to find a cut that actually SUITS my hair and doesn't make me look awful. As of now, I still haven't managed to accomplish either of these things. Anyone here have any suggestions? I'm getting desperate. I know this is for curly hair but I figured if anyone would know about poofy, frizzy hair, you guys would!

| My Baby Ally |
[14 Nov 2009|06:06pm] |
So i just thought i'd post about my kitten Ally...Again.
Things she does that are adorable: -Even though the dog is obviously three times her size she will jump on her and attack her ears, snout and tail. -She is very sweet in the morning, but gets more hyper and wants nothing to do with cuddling and only wants to play as the day wears on. -If you pass her and she's hiding under a chair or bed she'll attack your ankles or feet. -She would rather sleep in a plastic chair than her soft catbed anyday. -She will only go outside if you are outthere with her. If you leave her out there and close the door then she will climb up the door and peek in the window. Her way of saying let me back in. -She knows how to get what she wants. If you are trying to be stern with her she will look at you with those greenish-gray eyes and meow in the sweetest way to get what she wants. She always wins. -last but not least when you are sitting up, obviously not asleep, she will try to laydown on your neck or chest.
I will post pictures up later. She's the cutest thing.
I have a question though. She likes to jump on the table and explore it. How do i stop that? If i tell her no she waits until i walk toward her then jumps off. But a few minutes later she's up there again. I wouldn't mind if sometimes food wasn't on the table.

| leather vs vegetarian shoes |
[14 Nov 2009|04:50pm] |
so this may be a bit too exact of a question, but i have to ask..
deciding solely on the global mess made, which do you think is more environmentally friendly: a pair of leather shoes or an exact replica with vegetarian leather?
the way i see it, the leather would be more environmentally friendly simply because whether or not i choose to, there are going to be people eating cows & waste not want not.. but if i were to choose vegetarian leather, we're going to have to create that from new raw materials..
what do you think? anyone know how to make rope sandals?

| Race Change + Warlock question |
[14 Nov 2009|06:04pm] |
|
This is probably a silly question, but I cant find an answer to it anywhere. I want to do a race change on my warlock but I wonder, when the change goes through, will my demons still retain their current names? I know its a silly question, but I have two locks at the same level and want to consolidate, so the original lock is getting prettied up and basically becoming the other lock since I like her "mileage" and demon names better.
Also, because I was waiting for the race change and debabting on getting it once they were available, I havent touched my lock in like half a year so Im way out of the loop. Does anyone know of a good warlock guide that they could point me to? Similar to amiyuy's BM Hunter guide. Just all that basic information that has changed since I last played. It would be far easier than looking at a billion blogs and finding conflicting information.
Thanks ladies!

| Tofurky or not Tofurky? |
[14 Nov 2009|05:00pm] |
That is the question... ok that was dumb.
Every year for Thanksgiving I make two Tofurky roasts for my family... I have a few standby recipes for the glaze and then I generally try something new for the second roast. This year I'm planning on slow cooking one roast, but here's the kicker... Turns out my husband doesn't love Tofurky roasts.
We were totally spoiled to have the Unturkey a few years in a row and Tofurky just doesn't compare. We're not big fans of the wild rice stuffing.
So he suggested we do a mock duck for the other roast.
Is that crazy?!?!
It looks like a freakin' duck too. I'm not sure I can handle cooking it, even if it didn't look like a dead animal.
I actually have a question though. For Thanksgiving participants, what's on your menu?

| A new kitten in the house! |
[14 Nov 2009|06:50pm] |
Today my mother and I went to our local humane society to look at the dogs that are up for adoption, because our Rotty-Dane mix is in bad shape and probably won't see the end of winter. :/ While we were there, we decided to look in on the cats and kittens, and there she was-- A tiny, bedraggled tuxedo kitten, with the saddest eyes I have ever seen on a kitten so young.
We asked the staff member who'd accompanied us to the upper floor about her, and it turns out they'd just found her the day before inside their boardroom. She'd been abandoned by her mother, and they'd already lost 2 of her littermates. My mother took one look at her and volunteered to foster her right there on the spot.
I live out in a rural area, so our Humane Society is often over filled and understaffed-- They didn't really think twice about letting us bring her home in hopes of nursing her to full health. They'd had her with a surrogate mama, but they were still thinking they'd lose her anyways. She's about a month old, and we're calling her Darling, because she's so tiny-- about the size of the two kittens my female had when they were 2-3 weeks, far too small for her actual age. She has a URI, which is why they were so pessimistic about her survival, but we ought to be able to clear that up just fine.
As soon as we had her out of her cage and being cuddled by my mother and I, she perked right up. Just seeing this feels like a hopeful sign, that she just needed some private care and attention, which I can't fault the shelter for being unable to provide, since all of their cat rooms are absolutely filled.
I've raised kittens before, but they had their mother for milk, though we supplemented it with formula-- If no one minds, could I get a few tips for straight-formula feeding? We're using a syringe right now, because we've lost the bottle that came with the formula, and she seems interested enough, but she won't lap it up herself, and I'm afraid of making her eat, incase she accidentally aspirates it.

I have two cats who are both 18 months old. This week, I switched from Adult Purina One cat food to Nutro Weight Control Food. I've been mixing their old food with the new food. But, I've been noticing that they'll eat all of their old food first and leave the new food behind. However, when they decide that they're hungry enough, they'll finish the Nutro.
Is this normal or is this a sign of them saying, "Mom, I hate this. Why are you giving this to me?"
If it's them hating their new food, what's another good brand for weight control?

Hi all :) I'm not too good at the whole math/scientific thing so I thought I'd ask here... where smarter people roam :)
I'm currently taking Ortho Tri-cyclen LO ( I NEED to be on low estrogen birth control) My insurance company just sent me Trinessa... which I've never even heard of before. ( I have to get my meds through the mail from the insurance company)
I googled them and came up with Ortho Tri cyclen LO: http://www.rxlist.com/ortho-tri-cyclen-lo-drug.htm and the Trinessa: http://www.rxlist.com/trinessa-drug.htm
I see some differences in the numbers but have no idea what this means.
If it's not a low estrogen I have to call them up, scream at them and get my money back for sending me something I'm not even on :(
Can anyone explain this to me? Are they technically the same?
What happens if you just switch bc pill brands/types? Is there a waiting period for unprotected sex? Are the side effects going to be worse?

| Please help. I'm going crazy and I desperately need advice. |
[14 Nov 2009|06:26pm] |
So I've been on Alesse for about 6-7 months. In the beginning, I was pretty irritable for the first week or so but that's about it. Alesse has been great for me for the past half year except for the last month I would often forget to take the pill and have to take it the next day. So on October 23rd I switched to Nuvaring, which is probably the biggest mistake of my life. I went off of Nuvaring on November 1st because I began to feel depressed and such. I've been off of Nuvaring for 2 weeks and every single day I'm either extremely sad, or I feel horrible anxiety, and I've cried every single day since. Before I even began birth control, I was kind of emotional; I've always been an emotional person but I've never cried like this.
I've had a boyfriend for the past 2 years and few months. He's the most amazing person I've ever met and I honestly can't imagine my life without him. We're completely in love but since I went off of birth control, I've been feeling confused about our relationship. One minute I'm happy and I know I want to be with him, and the next I'm crying and upset and I don't understand this feeling. Before the Nuvaring, I knew what I wanted, and now I'm so lost. He's SO amazing through all of this; he comforts me any time I need him and tries to understand this but I can't keep putting him through all of this.
I know I love him, and he loves me but I don't know why I'm feeling this way. I know it's the hormones (which is kind of what my doctor said). Apparently Nuvaring has a higher dose of estrogen or something and Alesse is a lower dose. My doctor put me back on Alesse (I've been on it for the past 2 days). Last night, I was really happy all night long (from about 7pm-4am). But this morning and all day, I've just been feeling the usual sadness. I can't take anymore of this. I haven't been to school in 3 weeks (university, not high school). I'm forgetting what happiness feels like. When the sadness takes over, I can't think straight. I feel like no one knows what I'm going through. I feel like I'm going crazy.
Can anyone give me advice please, before I go crazy.

| Brunch? |
[14 Nov 2009|06:09pm] |
Hey vegetarians,
I've been invited to do a brunch-potluck-type-thing with some friends tomorrow, but I'm seriously lacking in cooking inspiration. This may reveal the utter limits of my brunch imagination, but one friend has already offered to cook an egg dish, and another is cooking a potato dish, and I have no clue whatsoever what I can make that will contribute to the brunch mix that is neither an egg nor a potato dish. Ideas? What are your favorite brunch dishes?
My friends are mostly of the meat-eating variety, so I want to make something that will appeal to them as well as to me.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.
